#30RhedeontDays takes you behind some of the best photos taken by Darryl D. Smith and Kali Rhe Rogers. Here is why the photo was chosen in their words:
There usually isn’t a limit to what I’ll shoot. Like Darryl, I usually don’t mind photographing anything. However, if I had to shoot one subject for the rest of my life and nothing more, it would probably be live music.
Concert/live music photography is my absolute favorite thing to shoot. I’m a reformed concert junkie, so transitioning from attendee to photographer was a no brainer. Being able to shoot a concert as it happens, whether in the pit or close by the stage, is something I can say I’ve truly grown to enjoy. Grammy-award winning MC Lupe Fiasco was one of the guys I was really lucky to be able to shoot pics of.
In 2009, Lupe Fiasco was the headlining musical act to perform at the Sprite Step-off in Raleigh, N.C. At the time, I was assigned to shoot the event for the Nubian Message, one of NC State University’s student media publications. I didn’t know until a day or two before the event that Lupe was scheduled to perform. At the time, shooting this was like beating Final Fantasy VII for some kids – a pretty big accomplishment.
My hard drive unfortunately crashed just months after this happened, so many of the photos from that performance as well as the rest of the event are most likely gone. However, I’m glad this one was one of the few that I was still able to grab.
