#30RhedeontDays takes you behind some of the best photos taken by Darryl D. Smith and Kali Rhe Rogers. Here is why the photo was chosen in their words:
When I was a student at North Carolina State University, I wound up immersing myself into the hip-hop scene in eastern NC. I’ve come across plenty of artists in the area, both students and non-students. One of the artists I’ve met and shot pictures of in the area was DescendentMC, a VA native and St. Augustine’s University grad, back in summer of 2010.
We went around different parts of the city for this shoot, including at Free Expression Tunnel on State’s campus. If you haven’t heard of the Free Expression Tunnel, it’s one of the more unique spots at NC State. The pedestrian tunnel is the longest on the campus and is well-known for the fact that anyone is allowed to decorate the walls with anything. This includes promoting parties, putting up posters, doing some graffiti art. You name it, it’s been done. This is also the location where the NC State cyphers has become a weekly tradition dating back to 2010.
I thought it would be ideal to have some shots done there. This photo was definitely one of my favorites from the shoot as well as from that summer. I do miss North Carolina from time to time; photos like these are a reminder of that.
