Here is why the photo was chosen in their words:<\/p>\n<p>While in New Orleans less than a year after Hurricane Katrina, I was working with The New York Times Student Journalism Institute. While in the middle of a meeting, a huge barge fire occurred.<\/p>\n<p>A few of us shot out the door, no questions asked, an<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">d headed to the scene of the fire. After shooting for a minute, this photo was the best of the batch. The lady was an onlooker who stopped to observe the fire.<\/p>\n<p>It was my first time shooting a photo like this for a news story, as my focus had always been on getting the face(s) of whoever I was shooting.
